Carbon Infrared Underfloor Heating Film
Carbon Infrared Underfloor Heating Film is an ultra-thin, highly durable underfloor heating film for laying directly under floating floors. A printed carbon (graphite) element heats up within minutes and spreads warmth evenly across the whole floor, with a life expectancy of up to 50 years.
Choose Your Film
The film is sold by the metre. Choose the heat output and width, enter the number of metres and add it to your basket. For example, a quantity of 18 on the 80 cm wide film gives you one continuous 18-metre roll.
Product Description
Say goodbye to cold floors and clunky radiators. This Carbon Infrared Underfloor Heating Film uses a printed graphite paste as its heating element, giving fast, consistent heat that spreads evenly across the floor surface.
At just 0.34 mm thick, the film fits neatly under floating floor coverings with almost no effect on floor height, which makes it ideal for both new builds and retrofit projects. It can be used as a primary heating system or alongside existing heating, depending on the property's heat loss and layout.
The system heats up quickly, so warmth is usually felt within minutes rather than hours. Once installed correctly, the film is extremely durable and designed for long-term use, with a service life of up to 50 years. Supplied through our strategic partnership with HEATVIS.
Each heating zone is controlled by a thermostat with a floor temperature sensor, giving precise, room-by-room temperature control. This improves comfort, protects the floor covering and helps keep running costs down.
Which heat output should I choose?
- 130 W/m², our standard film. Suits most rooms, including conservatories and thicker floor coverings. If you are not sure, choose this one.
- 110 W/m². For floor coverings up to 14 mm thick.
- 80 W/m². For passive houses, new builds and large floor areas.
What is it suitable for?
- Primary heating or supplementary underfloor heating
- New builds and retrofit projects
- Directly beneath floating solid-core floors such as laminate, engineered wood and click vinyl
- Carpet or soft vinyl flooring, when installed together with Flexel ECOMAX-DUO, which creates a stable, heat-spreading surface above the film
What is it not suitable for?
- Not suitable for installation under screed or self-levelling compound
For screeded floors, a traditional electric heating mat should be used instead.
- Not suitable for use under ceramic or stone floor tiles
- Cannot be installed in UK "special locations" as defined by the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), including bathrooms and shower rooms, swimming pool areas, saunas and other wet environments
In these areas, electric heating mats or aluminium heating foil systems should be used instead.
How to Calculate What You Need
Installing carbon infrared underfloor heating film is straightforward if you break it down into components. Follow the steps below to work out exactly what you need.
- XPS Thermal Insulation Boards
• Measure the total floor area of the room, wall to wall. The insulation boards must cover the whole floor, not just the heated area.
• Add 10% extra to allow for waste and cutting.
• The boards insulate against heat loss into the subfloor and also act as the underlay for your floor covering, so no other underlay is needed. - Carbon Infrared Underfloor Heating Film (you are on this page)
• Work out the heated floor area only. This is always smaller than the room, because the film never covers the whole floor.
• Keep the film at least 50 mm away from the walls and any obstacles. You can leave more, but never less.
• Leave about 100 mm at the ends of the strips to give room for the connections.
• Do not lay film under built-in furniture such as kitchen units, fitted wardrobes or fixed cabinets.
• Strips can sit right next to each other and touch, but must never overlap.
• The film can only be cut on the marked lines every 20 cm, so each strip length must be a multiple of 20 cm.
• Mix the widths (50, 80 and 100 cm) to cover the area with as little waste as possible. - Vapour Barrier
• Cover the whole floor with the vapour barrier, including the unheated areas.
• Overlap the joins by 100 mm and allow extra for cutting.
• The vapour barrier adds a second insulating layer, creating a double-insulated (Class II) system that helps the installation comply with the IET Wiring Regulations. - Heavy-Duty Adhesive Tape
• Usually 1 to 2 rolls per room.
• Holds the insulation boards, heating film and vapour barrier in place. - Connection Crimps
• Two crimps per heating film strip.
• Available in packs of 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50. - Bitumen Tape
• Used to insulate the connection crimps.
• About 10 cm per crimp, so 1 metre covers 10 crimps (5 strips).
• Choose the length you need, from 1 to 5 metres. Each length is supplied as one continuous piece. - Crimping Tool
• Needed to fix the crimps securely to the heating film conductors.
• If you don't already have one, we recommend adding it to your order. - Termination Discs
• Used to seal the unconnected ends of the heating film.
• Two termination discs per strip.
• Supplied in packs of 20. - Cold Tail Leads
• Double-insulated flexible cable in brown and blue.
• Connects the heating film to the thermostat circuit.
• Usually one 10 m length of each colour per room (up to about 15 m²) is enough. - Thermostat
• Choose a thermostat for electric underfloor heating with a floor temperature sensor.
• You need one thermostat per room or heating zone.
