Electric Underfloor Heating Cost per m² and Running Costs
Short answer: our electric underfloor heating kits for laminate and wood floors cost about £26 to £36 per m² for the heating parts, and a 15 m² room costs roughly £1.50 a day to run on a cold day. The details are below, and our heating calculator works it out for your own room.
Cost per m² to buy
Each Kit PRO has the heating film, crimps, cold tails, tapes and vapour barrier for one room. Prices include VAT.
| Kit | Price | Per m² |
|---|---|---|
| 5 m² kit, 50 cm film | £179 | £35.80 |
| 10 m² kit, 50 cm film | £299 | £29.90 |
| 10 m² kit, 1 m film | £269 | £26.90 |
| 15 m² kit, 50 cm film | £439 | £29.27 |
| 20 m² kit, 1 m film | £519 | £25.95 |
| 25 m² kit, 1 m film | £649 | £25.96 |
For big floors you can buy the heating film by the metre, from £19.91 per m² for 1 m wide film, and we design the layout with you.
Also allow for: a thermostat with floor sensor (£89.99), insulation board if the floor has none, and an electrician to connect it. Under carpet you also need ECOMAX-DUO boards.
Running costs
Our film gives 130 W per m². With a thermostat, once the room is warm the heating is only on for part of the time. Here we assume it is on half the time, for 6 hours a day, at 25p per kWh:
| Heated floor | Per day | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| 10 m² | £0.98 | about £29 |
| 15 m² | £1.46 | about £44 |
| 20 m² | £1.95 | about £59 |
How to keep running costs down
- Put insulation board under the film, so the heat goes up into the room.
- Use a thermostat with a floor sensor and a timer, and heat the room only when you use it.
- In a well-insulated room or new build, the gentler 110 W/m² kit is often enough.
- Keep rugs and thick underlay off heated areas.
