Electric Underfloor Heating Under Carpet
Yes, you can have electric underfloor heating under carpet. The trick is a firm, flat layer between the heating and the carpet. We use our thin carbon underfloor heating film with ECOMAX-DUO overlay boards on top, then the carpet goes down as normal. It suits bedrooms, living rooms, landings and offices.
How it goes together
- Insulation board on the subfloor, so the heat goes up into the room and not down. Our XPS insulation board works well.
- Heating film rolled out across the open floor (not under beds, wardrobes or fitted furniture), with the polyester vapour barrier over it. A Kit PRO has everything for one room in one box.
- ECOMAX-DUO boards on top: two thin layers of board that float over the film with no screws and no screed. Each pack covers 2.88 m² and adds only 7 mm to the floor height.
- Carpet underlay and carpet fitted as normal.
- A thermostat with a floor sensor, wired in by an electrician.
Why not lay the film straight under the carpet?
Carpet grippers need nailing down, people kneel and move furniture on carpet, and soft underlay does not spread the weight. Without a firm board the film can be damaged. The ECOMAX-DUO boards protect the film and give a flat base, which also suits sheet vinyl and lino.
What it costs, for example
A bedroom of about 12 m², with about 10 m² of open floor to heat:
| Kit PRO 130 W/m², 10 m² kit | £299.00 |
| ECOMAX-DUO boards, 5 packs to cover the whole floor | £468.55 |
| Smart Wi-Fi thermostat with floor sensor | £89.99 |
| Parts in total (insulation board and fitting extra) | £857.54 |

Rooms where carpet heating is not the right choice
Bathrooms and shower rooms need a different product: our ECOFLOOR cable mat under tiles, or ECOFOIL under laminate. For laminate and wood floors you don't need the boards at all; see electric underfloor heating for laminate and wood floors.
Who fits it?
We supply the parts and design the layout. The film must be connected by a qualified electrician. If you don't have one, our installation partner Standard Electrical Services can quote.
